Around 9 am, after breakfast, your Jungle Guide will pick you up at your guesthouse. Follow him along the river and then uphill through rubber plantations to the entrance of Gunung Leuser National Park. Here you will have a great chance of spotting Bukit Lawang’s semiwild orangutans as well as the lovely Thomas leaf monkeys and long-tailed macaques. Here you will have some time to enjoy this impressive scenery of wild apes and monkeys swinging in the trees around you…

As the Day Tours and 2 Day Treks are quiet famous, your Jungle Guide will choose a route off the beaten track on the way to your first campsite. Meet up to 4 different monkey species, white-handed gibbons, turtles and the melodious peacock when you trek through the densely wooded mountains. After one or two hours of hiking you will have a refreshing break with tropical fruits of the area. Find some comfort on the big buttress roots of the jungle giants and let the incredible jungle vibes around you sink in.  

Then hike up a few more hills and find an impressive waterfall with a natural swimming pool in front of you. Here you will have time to relax, take a swim and restore your energy with a yummy lunch of nasi goreng. Continue your trekking when you feel ready and explore more wildlife on your way. Around 4 pm you will arrive at one of our campsites close to a small stream.

Relax and refresh yourself after the impressions of your first day and have some tea or coffee with cookies while discovering the area around your campsite. The day will fade with a delicious homemade dinner and chatting or playing funny games with your guides and trekking mates around candles and a bonfire. Fall asleep surrounded by magical jungle sounds….

Wake up in the morning around 8 am together with the wildlife of Gunung Leuser National Park and enjoy the scenery around you. After a beautifully decorated breakfast of toast and omelet with some vegetables or pancakes, pack all your belongings and start hiking again between 9 and 10 am.

On the second day of your jungle trek you will learn a lot about tropical plants and meet more inhabitants of North Sumatra’s rainforest. Keep an eye out for rare species like black gibbons, hornbills, sun bears and silver leaf monkeys! In the deeper parts of the rainforest you have a higher chance of spotting different species of birds as well. Have your second lunch in the jungle surrounded by nature sounds and rest for a while.

If you are still high on energy, your Jungle Guide will bring you up to the most spectacular orchard view. From there you can overview the mountains of Gunung Leuser National Park as well as the valley of Bahorok River. If you are lucky, you might see many beautifully flowering orchards…

Around 4 pm you will arrive at your second campsite next to another rainforest stream. The Monitor lizard who lives there since many years will probably give you a visit. Enjoy your last jungle dinner after sunset and relax with your trekking mates while listening to the jungle stories of your guide. If your are interested, he will try to show you some nocturnal inhabitants of the rainforest, like slowloris, owls or civet cats.

After your second night in the jungle, you will feel like a real explorer! Have some homemade breakfast with jungle decoration and enjoy the morning atmosphere of the rainforest. Now you can choose between relaxing at the river campsite or trekking for another few more hours through this impressive jungle.

Before the trek you should decide weather you would like to walk back to Bukit Lawang on the third day or rafting down the river on big rubber tires which are knotted as a boat and promise a lot of fun! With our traditional “jungle taxi” you will arrive in Bukit Lawang between noon and 3 pm, where your guide will accompany you back to your guesthouse.

Do some more activities in the afternoon or just walk around in the village to have some coffee or smoothies and let the impressions of the last 2 days sink in…
