Trek Highlights

Itinerary

At 9 am, after breakfast, your Jungle Guide will pick you up at your guesthouse. Follow him along the river on a short walk through Bukit Lawang, where you can experience the morning village atmosphere with the sounds and smells of the early day. Then, the trail leads us uphill for about 30–40 minutes through a rubber plantation – with a bit of luck, we will already encounter the lovely Thomas leaf monkeys here!

As soon as we reach the national park, we are immersed in the sounds of the jungle: the chirping of cicadas, the calls of gibbons and the rustling of leaves from the enormous trees around us. First encounters with the released semiwild orangutans are very likely in this area, and sometimes even white-handed gibbons or other monkey species can be seen. You will have some time to enjoy this impressive scenery of wild apes and monkeys swinging in the trees around you… Then we will hike along narrow, root-covered paths through the mountainous landscape of the rainforest, keeping an eye out for the melodious argus pheasant, orangutans, gibbons and different monkey species. As the Day Tours and 2 Day Treks are quiet famous, your Jungle Guide will try to choose a route off the beaten track. Along the way, there will of course be breaks to refresh ourselves with tropical fruits and later on, lunch on the roots of the jungle trees to regain our energy.

After a last steep climb downhill, we’ll reach our first camp in the afternoon – idyllically located on a small side arm of the Landak River, nestled in a quiet valley surrounded by densely forested mountainsides. After a refreshing dip in the clear water, we’ll enjoy a cosy evening with delicious food, stories around the campfire or fun games – accompanied by the enchanting sounds of the rainforest.

Wake up in the morning together with the wildlife of Gunung Leuser National Park and enjoy the scenery around you. After an energizing breakfast of jungle toast or pancake, pack all your belongings and start hiking again around 9 am.

The second day is another day of continuous climbing and descending steep paths. Along the way, there might be more chances to spot wildlife – possibly hear the siamangs calling loudly through the forest, see hornbills gliding over the treetops or spot turtles wandering near streams. The paths are narrow and, when it gets steep, often equipped with lianas or ropes to hold on to. Your guide will be there to help you at all times and show you which steps will get you safely to your destination. If you are still high on energy, your Jungle Guide will bring you up to the most spectacular orchard view. From there you can overview the mountains of Gunung Leuser National Park as well as the valley of Bahorok River. If you are really lucky, you might see many beautifully flowering orchards…

After a long way down the last hill, we’ll finally get to the second camp, which is located right on the wide Bohorok River. Depending on the position of the tents, we might need to cross the river – your team will help you with this and make sure you get to the other side safely and that all your backpacks stay dry. In this camp, you’ll find a totally different ambience: it’s more open and spacious. The sound of the river is vibrant and powerful and conveys a feeling of wild force – another enchanting facet of the jungle. The evening ends once again with a variety of dishes, candlelight, games or simply enjoying the view of the endless immensity of the night sky full of stars.

The last morning begins with a relaxed breakfast. Afterwards, there is time to explore the nearby waterfall – a real jungle shower awaits you here and you can try some jungle make-up using natural materials. Those who feel like having enough energy can set off on another short hike (however, the final descent from the previous day is challenging if you have to walk uphill). Those who prefer a more relaxed pace can stay by the river, look out for hornbills or other animals, and enjoy refreshing swims in between.

After lunch, we return to Bukit Lawang by ‘jungle taxi’. We float down the Bohorok River on large, tied-together tyre tubes and will have a lot of fun in the rapids. In the afternoone we’ll arrive in the village  where you can do some more activities or just enjoy the village, have some coffee or smoothie and let the impressions of the last 3 days sink in…
