Itinerary

Around 9 am, after breakfast, your jungle guide will pick you up at your guesthouse. Follow him along the river through Bukit Lawang and then uphill across a rubber plantation to the entrance of Gunung Leuser National Park. Here you will have a great chance of spotting semiwild Orangutans as well as the lovely Thomas Leaf Monkeys and Long Tail Macaques. You will have some time to enjoy this impressive scenery of wild apes and monkeys swinging in the trees around you…

From here your guide will choose a route off the beaten track on the way to your first campsite. Meet up to 4 different monkey species, white handed Gibbons, turtles and the melodious peacock when you trek through the densely wooded mountains. Have a refreshing break after one or two hours of hiking with tropical fruits of the area. Find some comfort on the big buttress roots of the jungle giants and let the incredible jungle vibes around you sink in. Then continue hiking for a few more hours until lunch break, where you can restore your energy with a yummy lunch of nasi goreng. Depending on which way your guide chose, you might have the chance to take a refreshing swim under an impressive waterfall. When you feel ready explore more wildlife on your way to the first campsite, where you will arrive around 4 pmRelax and refresh yourself after the impressions of your first day and have some tea or coffee with cookies while discovering the area around your campsite. The day will fade with a delicious homemade dinner and chatting or playing funny games with your guides and trekking mates around candles and bonfire. Fall asleep surrounded by the magical sound of the jungle….

The routine of the next days will be quite similar but never going to be boring! After breakfast at your campsite, which can be a jungle sandwich or pancake, pack your backpack and start hiking again. The deeper you go into the Gunung Leuser National Park, the higher become the chances of spotting rare wildlife, such as hornbills, wild Orangutans, siamangs, snakes and sun bears. Enjoy stunning views when you reach the top of Sumatra’s jungle hills, refresh yourself in small streams which flow through the mountain valleys and learn how to use lianas or roots for finding save steps while climbing through the Indonesian rainforest. On our 4 days trek you have the unique chance to learn all the details and history about the National Park and Indonesian’s rainforest in general and you get to know medical plants and their use if you are interested.

Every day your guide and his assistant will bring lunch for the trek while our porter and cook will prepare the next campsite for you. The nights at camp you can use for talking to your guides and listening to their adventures or going on a night walk to spot some nocturnal animals like slow loris, owls and snakes.

On your last day in the jungle, you can choose between relaxing at the campsite or doing a short last trek before going back to Bukit Lawang by rafting down the Bahorok River with our jungle taxi. It’s a lot of fun and will be a great last memory of your jungle adventure!

Note: On 4 days treks you will only stay at our prepared solid campsites, where we store soft mattresses, mosquito nets and cooking equipment. If you wish to go much deeper into the rainforest, we recommend you our 5 day trek (or even longer) or to let us know before the trek, so we can arrange an extra porter for the equipment needed in the deeper jungle.

Itinerary

Our 5 day treks start like all the shorter tours: after breakfast at 9 am in Bukit Lawang. Together with your guide you will walk through the lively village, climb up through the rubber plantation and reach the entrance of Gunung Leuser National Park. On this first day you have great chances to spot orangutans, gibbons, Thomas leaf monkeys and more wildlife – but you will also meet other trekking groups, especially during high season. The first night we will spend in one of our prepared campsites with mattresses, mosquito nets and cooking equipment – a comfortable base before the real adventure begins!

From the second day on, we will leave the well-trodden trails behind and step into the untouched rainforest. Here you will hardly meet any other people, the paths are no longer man-made but shaped by animals, and the jungle feels wild and pristine. The route now leads mostly along riverbeds, where you balance over rocks of all sizes and climb across rough, slippery terrain. It is less about steep ascents and descents (as during the shorter treks), but more about finding your way through water and stone. Be prepared to get wet – and to truly feel the wilderness under your feet!

Only on the 4th day, before we can raft back to Bukit Lawang, we have to climb and cross one more jungle hill. This means a final steep ascent and descent through thick rainforest – a real challenge, but one that rewards you with an even deeper connection to the wild.

Each day we will walk around 6 hours, and your guides will always look out for a beautiful place where you can stop for lunch break to restore your energy. There are a lot of animals in the jungle, but as they have never seen humans before they are very shy and elusive and therfore hard to spot and observe. The fewer animal sightings become all the more meaningful and impressive, evoking a very exceptional feeling of happiness. In the afternoon, we set up camp at remote spots that will always be nearby a stream or river as we need clean water for cooking and refilling our bottles but also to enjoy a good swim after the hike. From the second night on, our team builds the camps completely by themselves, using natural materials and the equipment that they with them so heavily. We will sleep all together under simple shelters, surrounded by nothing but jungle.

Evenings are spent with a delicious jungle dinner, sitting together by candlelight or a campfire, sharing stories, laughing and listening to the sounds of the night. Sometimes you may hear owls, or can be lucky to see the reflecting eyes of civet cats or slow loris in the dark – but in the real jungle, there are no guarantees. That’s exactly what makes it so unique and authentic.

If you are interested our team will always be happy to show you some of their survival tricks in the rainforest. Which plants and animals are poisonous? How to recognise weather footprints are fresh or already a few days old? Which plants to use for cooking, which ones for medical treatments? How to find your way through the wilderness when you loose track and many more things…

After that 5 days you will be perfectly able to find your way back home alone! Just kidding – On the last day, our famous “jungle taxi” awaits you: big rubber tubes tied together for a fun and refreshing rafting ride down the Bahorok River, back to Bukit Lawang – tired, wet, happy, and full of unforgettable memories.

This trek is perfect if you want to experience the real jungle – less crowded, raw, and full of surprises. It’s not about spotting many animals, but about discovering nature, testing your limits and learning skills that connect you deeply with the rainforest.

Itinerary

Our 6 day trek gives you the chance to discover the hidden corners of Gunung Leuser National Park – almost halfway between Bukit Lawang and Kutacane. Like all our tours, we start at 9 am after breakfast in Bukit Lawang and walk through the lively village and small rubber plantations before entering the national park. On the first day, we follow the same trails as the shorter treks, which means a good chance to encounter orangutans, Thomas leaf monkeys, pig-tailed macaques or gibbons – but also more groups of visitors, especially in the high season. The first night we stay in one of the prepared campsites at Landak River, complete with mosquito nets, mattresses and cooking equipment – a comfortable start before the adventure takes us deeper.

From the second day, the character of the trek changes completely. We leave the busy routes behind and head into the untouched rainforest. There are no marked paths anymore – only faint animal trails and the course of the river that often becomes our way forward. For hours we balance over slippery stones, climb along rocky riverbeds and wade through water. There won’t be steep ascents and descents like during the short treks, it’s more about finding our way through wild and challenging terrain. Encounters with other groups are very rare now, and the jungle feels remote and pristine.

Every day we spend around 6 hours trekking, with breaks for fresh fruit and a simple jungle lunch. Wildlife in the deep forest is much shyer than close to Bukit Lawang. You might spot hornbills, hear the distant calls of siamangs or see monitor lizards along the river. Compared to shorter treks, you will see fewer animals – often only from a distance – but the experience is more authentic and special, because here the rainforest belongs fully to the wildlife.

The campsites from the second night onwards are basic, built by our team from what the forest provides and what they carry with them. The spots are always located close to streams or rivers, which give us drinking water, a natural bath and the calming sound of rushing water at night.

One of the highlights of the long trek is learning survival skills from your guides. You will discover which plants are edible and how to prepare them – from young fern leaves to bamboo, mushrooms or the juicy core of banana stems. You can try catching fish with nets or even with your bare hands, collect firewood, and learn how to light a fire in the rainforest. Your guides will show you which plants can heal and which are poisonous, how to recognize fresh animal tracks, and how to orient yourself without paths. It’s a true wilderness training –  a true wilderness school that comes as part of your adventure.

On the fifth day we have to cross another ridge to reach a new valley, which makes rafting on the Bahorok River possible on the last day. This section includes a final steep ascent and descent, before we set up camp for a last time. After six days in the wilderness, the trek ends with a fun and refreshing rafting ride back to Bukit Lawang on our jungle taxi made of giant rubber tubes.

The 6 day trek is ideal for those who want to go further, spend more nights in the rainforest and experience North Sumatra’s wilderness in its purest form. It is physically demanding, but offers a once-in-a-lifetime chance to truly disconnect and live with the rhythm of the jungle.

Combination Option (Private Treks Only):

From 6 days onwards, it is possible to combine the experiences: spend the first 2–3 days in the semi-wild jungle near Bukit Lawang, where wildlife encounters are more frequent, and then continue into the deep, untouched rainforest. This way you get the best of both worlds, but it means less time in the wild jungle and it doesn’t venture that deep into the rainforest. We hope for your understanding that this option is only available on private tours.

Itinerary

Our 7-day trek is the ultimate adventure for those who want to spend a full week in the untouched rainforest of Sumatra. As with all tours, we start in Bukit Lawang after breakfast at 9 am. After a first encounter with semi-wild orangutans and other wildlife near the park entrance, we leave the busier trails behind on the second day and step into the deep jungle – far away from other groups, where silence and wilderness surround us.

Over the course of the trek we will mostly follow riverbeds, cross valleys and climb ridges with breathtaking views of the endless rainforest. Along the way we take jungle showers under waterfalls, discover hidden streams and spend the nights in simple camps built by our team. Out here the forest feels wilder and quieter – animals are more shy, but every sighting becomes a truly authentic moment. With luck and patience we might encounter hornbills, deer or even the footprints of elephants or tigers. Please note: these animals are wild and very elusive, so sightings can never be guaranteed – they remain rare and special experiences in the wild. To increase the chances of spotting the forest giants, we recommend booking our elephant expedition.

This 7 day trek is about learning how to live with the forest. Step by step you will discover how little you actually need: your guides will show you how to survive in the wilderness and what incredible things you can do with the material that nature offers us, how to collect and prepare food directly from the jungle, how to use natural materials for cooking and shelter, and how to read the forest to find your way. .You will completely adapt to mother nature on this hike – an experience that sharpens your senses and teaches you to trust yourself and the rhythm of the jungle. Take a moment to realise that you are in the middle of nowhere and breathe in this indescribable freedom…

Each day we hike around 6 hours, with fruit breaks and jungle lunches in between. Try to pack your backpack as light as possible as you have to carry it every day while hiking through the wild terrain. You won’t need many things. Most importantly you need to bring good mood and motivation for this unique adventure!  Afternoons are spent swimming in cool streams, exploring the surroundings or just resting in the shade of the trees. Evenings are magical: we cook dinner together, sit by the fire, listen to jungle stories or venture out for night walks in search of nocturnal animals such as slow lorises, owls or snakes.

On the seventh day, our team prepares the way back by our floating “jungle taxi”. For several hours we raft down the Bahorok River on massive rubber tubes, stopping halfway for lunch and a swim before the river carries us back to Bukit Lawang. It’s the perfect ending to a week full of impressions, challenges and unforgettable jungle moments.

This 7-day trek is demanding, but it gives you something unique: the chance to disconnect from the outside world and truly become part of the rainforest. It’s not just about adventure – it’s about experiencing nature with all your senses and discovering a different side of yourself.

Are you curious and keen on becoming a real “orang hutan” – person of the forest?
