Most important requirement for joining a trek:
Your Health

Your health and well-being are our top priority.

Before your trek begins, please inform our organiser about your current health condition. It is essential that we are aware of any chronic or acute illnesses, allergies or other physical restrictions in advance, so that we can plan accordingly and respond quickly in case of an emergency.

Please also share any details that may seem minor or irrelevant in your everyday life, as even small issues can become more significant in the rainforest.

Jungle trekking can be physically demanding, not only because of the hiking itself, but also due to the tropical climate, humidity and changes in food. Your body may react differently to what you expect, so being well prepared and transparent about your health will help us to ensure that everyone has a safe and enjoyable experience.

Essential Information

Itinerary Details

We created the Tulang Kepang Treks as a thoughtful alternative to the well‑known trekking routes behind Bukit Lawang. The classic orangutan treks (1–4 days) in the mountain area directly behind Bukit Lawang have become more popular over the last view years. Especially in high season, you will most likely meet several other trekking groups, and especially orangutan sightings often attract larger crowds. Rangers and conservation efforts therefore mainly focus on this area, where trekking tourism has been established for many years.

North of Bukit Lawang (towards Tulang Kepang), however, the rainforest continues just as dense, wild and species‑rich – but without any regular trekking activity. As this area doesn’t belong to the territory of the semi-wild, rehabilitated orangutans, very few trekking routes exist here. At the same time, it is an area that is more affected by illegal hunting, precisely because ranger patrols concentrate on the more frequented regions closer to Bukit Lawang.

Only through the close collaboration with our former hunter team we became aware of both the ecological value of this area and the challenges it faces. The idea behind the Tulang Kepang Treks is therefore not to “open up” untouched nature for tourism, but to create presence, awareness and alternative livelihoods in a part of the park that has so far lacked all three.

Our Tulang Kepang Treks are available from 1 to 5 days, making them ideal for guests who want to experience true wilderness far from any other tourists but do not have time for our long expeditions. Get ready for genuine exploration, authentic rainforest & the possibility of meaningful wildlife encounters!

One‑day treks require a short transfer by motorbike or pick‑up truck to the starting point, as the full route would otherwise be too long to return on the same day.

For Tulang Kepang treks with overnight stays in the jungle, we start directly at our accommodation in Bukit Lawang at 9 a.m., after breakfast. We do not pass the official national park gate, but instead climb a steep rubber plantation behind our guesthouse. Once we leave the last cultivated land behind, the rainforest begins.

Even though we don’t pass the main entrance, national park permits are mandatory for every participant. All tours are registered with the rangers and the HPI office, ensuring that trekking activities are coordinated and approved.

From the first day on, the terrain is physically demanding. The route leads constantly uphill and downhill, in parts very steep, and rewards you with spectacular views over the surrounding mountain ranges. There are no established trails here – the forest floor is covered with leaves, often slippery, and dense vegetation makes progress slower and more adventurous.

After the first strenuous climbs, we take a well-deserved break with fresh tropical fruits. Later, after a few more hills – and perhaps after your first wildlife sightings – we stop for an energising  jungle lunch of Nasi Goreng.

Depending on the route and length of your trek, there may be opportunities to swim under beautiful waterfalls or explore hidden caves in the forest. Every day feels different, shaped by the terrain, the weather and the rhythm of the forest.

We usually reach our campsites between 4 or 5 p.m., leaving enough time for a refreshing swim before dusk. The rivers here are much smaller than the Bahorok River in Bukit Lawang – more similar to the gentle Landak River (which we follow during our River Treks). The water flows directly from the mountains, without passing through any villages or settlements.

While our team is used to drinking directly from these streams, we strongly advise you not to do so, as unboiled jungle water requires a certain level of adaptation.

Evenings are a special time in the jungle: after a refreshing swim, the team prepares dinner, and everyone gathers to eat, share stories, and enjoy the peaceful atmosphere. Simple games, laughter, and the sounds of the rainforest create a truly memorable experience. The camps are simple, remote and fully immersed in nature (more details can be found in the section above: Essential Information).

This part of the National Park is completely wild – animals here are neither rehabilitated nor accustomed to humans. This means that sightings can never be guaranteed. However, based on the experience of our local team, there are realistic chances to encounter wild orangutans, gibbons and hornbills, and to find fresh tracks of sun bears or even tigers – a reminder of how untouched and alive this ecosystem truly is!

Animals in this area are shy and elusive, as they are not used to humans, which makes every encounter all the more special and creates truly unforgettable moments…

As this area is still occasionally used for hunting, there is a chance that you may encounter local hunters or find traps – especially those used for catching birds.

One important goal of our Tulang Kepang Treks is to create alternatives. By working closely with former hunters and involving them in sustainable tourism, we hope to encourage others to follow this path – to remove traps, protect the flora & fauna, and help create a more sustainable future for this unique part of the rainforest.

Trekking here is not only about avoiding (mass) tourism, but about responsible presence, supporting local knowledge and contributing to the long‑term protection of this part of the national park.

On the last day, after another jungle hike, we reach the village of Tulang Kepang. From here, we organise transport back to Bukit Lawang – either by motorbike (for small groups) or by pick‑up truck or school bus (for larger groups). The ride takes about 15 minutes and passes through large palm oil plantations. After days in the forest, the fresh breeze during this short drive feels incredibly refreshing – the perfect ending to your adventure.

The Tulang Kepang Trek is ideal for travelers who want to:

  • hike without meeting other trekking groups
  • wittness the authentic rainforest
  • have realistic chances of wildlife encounters
  • face physical challenges
  • support sustainable alternatives to hunting

It is not about comfort or guarantees. This trek is for those who want to step off the beaten path: less predictable, more challenging, and deeply connected to nature.
